{ Who can become a member? }

To become a member of the NYSTD you must be a teacher of Ballroom dancing at least 18 years of age.

Levels of membership:

  • Active Membership you must have teaching experience as a principal or assistant. Teaching experience must have a minimum of 500 hours within 3 years of applying or at least 150 hours in each of the years taught. Applicants shall be required to pass a qualifying exam.

  • Associate Teaching Members you must be employed by, or associated to a member in teaching duties. Teaching experience must have less than 500 hours within 3 years of application and at least 100 hours in each of the years taught. Associate Teaching Members must apply for active membership within 2 years of the date of associate membership. Associate members will not be required to take a qualifying exam upon entering NYSTD, but will be required to do so when applying for full membership. Associate Teaching Members do not have the privilege of voting.

  • Life Membership you must be a NYSTD member for 25 years or more who has retired from active teaching. Life members do not have the privilege of voting, and will not be required to pay dues.

  • Inactive Membership you must be a NYSTD member in good standing for 10 or more consecutive years, who has retired from the dance teaching profession and are not otherwise eligible for Life Membership. Inactive Members do not have the privilege of voting, and pay annual dues at one-half the current active membership rate.

{ What does membership include? }

Membership includes:

  • Monthly Meetings
  • Monthly meeting notice
  • Dance World. NYSTD's monthly newsletter that contains a review and summary of the dance demonstrations at the previous meeting, information on future events, newspaper and magazine articles and news of general interest to the ballroom teacher.

{ How does one become a member? }

Requirements for Active Membership include character references, teaching experience (at least 3 years prior to application), endorsement by two active members and passing an examination. Applicants for membership belonging to a member organization of the National Dance Council are not required to take the examination.

An application may be printed from this site or may be obtained from the Membership Chairman who can answer any questions you may have.

Membership fees:

Single
First year (includes initiation fee) - $90.00
Annual dues thereafter - $70.00

Family (husband and wife or 2 members of an immediate family)
First year (includes initiation fee) - $125.00
Annual dues thereafter - $105.00

Non Members
At the invitation of a member, non-members may be invited to attend any session as a guest. For subsequent sessions, non members are charged a fee of $20.00 per session, which may be applied towards the membership application fee.
